Feijoa

Feijoa

The feijoa (Feijoa sellowiana) comes from the sub-tropical areas of South America. The feijoa is an evergreen bush with 2-3m height and grey-yellow branches. The leaves are opposite and hard with pappus and specific flavour. They are green in color but silver-grey underneath. The blossoms are epicene, big and crimson with white-pink pulpy leaflets.
The feijoa fruits are green with red tinge. They are ovate or oblong with 4-6sm width, 5-10sm length and 25-50g weight. The feijoa fruits look like a green plum with a short tail. In the inside the fruits have 4 nests with many seeds. The feijoa meat is thick, juicy and sour-sweet with nice flavour.
The feijoa is one of the most cold-resistant sub-tropical plants – it can stand temperatures up to minus 12-14˚С.
The feijoa is a very photophilic plant. It grows on poor, stony and sandy soils, although it grows better on generous soils. The feijoa needs a splash with warm water. The plant is responsive to fertilization.
Useful advices
  • Growing the Feijoa
  • You can grow the feijoa by using parts of a grown plant or by using seeds.
The first method has to be applied in October-December with the help of growing stimulant for 16-18 hours. The temperature has to be 26-28˚С and the air humidity has to be very high (90-100%). Extra light is needed.
The best time for the seed growing is in February. You have to use cups and mini conservatories.
When the plant comes into leaf it has a branched crown. It’s not recommended to prune it because the blossoms and the fruits are developed on the branches in the running year. You just have to pinch the young plants when they reach 20sm height.
The feijoa will grow fast enough and that’s why you have to replant it yearly.
