Summer savory (Satureja hortensis) can be cultivated all over the country as an annual crop. You can see it in the nature as perennial plant. The summer savory is a small oval-shaped bush. It is 20-40sm high and strongly branched. The blossoms are small, mauve and gathered in groups on the top of the branches. The blossoming season is from July till September. The seeds are also small, black and preserve their germination up to 2-3 years.
Summer savory is not so exigent over weather conditions but prefers sunny places with sufficient soil humidity. That’s why the plant needs irrigation. Best irrigation for the summer savory is the drip irrigation.
Summer savory is used as a spice but also as a medicinal plant. It is recommended for high blood pressure, indigestion, headache, tachycardia, diabetes and etc. The plant has bactericidal properties.

  • If you want to cultivate common savory in your garden, you have to produce seedlings in advance. You have to plant the seeds in March outdoors. For 1m² you need 1-1.5g seeds. When you plant the seeds you have to cover them with 1sm blend of soil and fertilizer or natural fertilizer. After a month the plants have to be moved to their permanent place. The common savory prefers sunny places and generous and textural soils.
    The collective parts of the common savory are the leaves, the flowers and the stems. You have to dry them up in a shadow. The leaves flavor is getting stronger after that. This is because of the high content of essential oil – up to 2%.
